1. How do you feel about your new appointment, and is this your first principalship?
I am delighted to have been appointed as Principal of St Joachim’s. This is my third principalship having been principal at St Joseph’s Enfield and St Martha’s Strathfield prior to this appointment.
2. When did you start teaching?
I started teaching in 1985 at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School at Baulkham Hills. I can still remember the great excitement of having my own class. Teaching has always brought me great joy.
3. What led you to this profession?
I have a strong sense of vocation and felt the need to make a difference in the world. I also have always had a great passion for children and there was never any question that I would become a teacher.
4. What are some of your key achievements as a teacher?
I love to see children learn and progress and become the best that they can be. It is the greatest joy to witness a child grow and be excited about their own skills and their own learning. I believe there is no greater achievement for a teacher than to be part of the success of others.
5. Complete this sentence: Teachers of the future must be ….
able to change and adapt so that they can constantly respond to the needs of students. Effective teachers know their students, know curriculum and make adjustments to ensure that the children are challenged and engaged. This skill will ensure that our children are well prepared for their own futures.
6. What is at the top of your wish list for St Joachim’s?
My top wish is to provide our children with a learning environment that is nurturing, holistic and challenging. With high expectations and high support our students will be exposed to a rigorous curriculum that will enable them to extend their talents and skills. My wish for every student is that they meet their own potential and live a life that is aligned to our school values of courage, virtue, honour and effort.
7. How would you describe your leadership style?
I believe that quality relationships are the cornerstone of learning and growth. A deep respect for people underpins decision making and this is crucial in building connections with staff, parents and of course the students. I also believe high expectations and quality teaching practice that is grounded in collaborative understandings are essential in achieving excellence.
8. What is your personal mantra?
My personal mantra is : Review, Reflect, Refine. It is a mantra that has emerged as a result of my beliefs. Good teachers constantly review their work and practices, think critically about what can be done to improve further and make the necessary adjustments that will enable this to occur. It is a constant challenge I set myself to constantly improve.
9. What are the books that have most influenced you?
The books that have greatly influenced me have been the works of educational researchers and school leaders who have transformed schools. Many of these have been foundational in my vision and knowledge of effective schooling.
10. How do you spend your free time?
I love to spend time with my family and friends. I enjoy movies and I love swimming, reading and, believe it or not, singing. These things bring me great joy.
